Skirting the Issue: Teaching Anika to sew!

July 12, 2012

We’ve been doing some “mom school” around here. Anika had a few things she really wanted to learn to do this summer – learn to read “all the way”, tell the time on an analog clock, and sew. Easy enough, except for the part where I am not exactly the best at the whole teaching thing…we’re getting there though!

Before getting started I read about the Skirting the Issue project happening over at Project Run & Play. The idea is that people with sewing skills take the month of July to make and donate handmade skirts to girls in Foster Care.

I thought this would be a brilliant way to get Anika sewing – and helping out some girls who really need it!

So last week we had our first “lesson” during Sam’s naptime. We decided to do some circle skirts using the Lil Blue Boo Twirl Skirt pattern. It’s pretty easy; there’s a few straight seams to sew…I’ll help her the waistbands – it seems like we can make it work!

We started last week by looking at how to put an epattern together. We printed off the patterns (we’re making three different sizes) and I showed Anika how to tape them together.

She did the whole thing by herself!

Then we worked on cutting out the correct size. She decided she’d like to make one in the 9/10 size, so she started cutting that one out. I helped her where the lines got really close together.

She did a really awesome job.

She was also mighty delighted with herself when she was done!

This week we’re going to tackle cutting out the fabric….should be interesting!!

Oh, this is so cool. My mom taught me to use a sewing machine (I was about 11 so a tad older). I have great memories of us making a quilt together. Great mother-daughter summertime activity! And such a good idea to donate them. You rock, Christy.

P.S. Your comment showed up on my blog!!! It worked!!!
